NEW IMPETUS FOR THE COMMUNITY DAM MANAGEMENT DRIVE

On 22 Jan 2015 hope was revived for a fresh new start to an intiative where the community assist the Department of Water Affairs with management of the dam. Although an official Dam Management body is still a long way off, one has to start somewhere with the eating of an elephant. It is generally acknowledged that Hartbeespoort forms part of one of the most complex water use areas in the country.

Hartbeespoort Eastern Foreshore Forum - has specific short term goals with a solid mandate from eastern foreshore managers. This is also the area around the dam with the largest concentration of RSA state property managed by lease holders. Consensus has been reached to incorporate valuable previous efforts by HWAG into this structure and build thereon. HWAG has been the previous community / DWA interface.

Apart from the short term goals, HEFF will thus also function as a spring-board to assist DWA with a future larger dam management body with representation of other stakeholders.

The HEFF management team was appointed as follows: Dr Johan Wentzel (Chairperson), Marius Slabbert (Vice-Chair), Karel Nel (Secretary) and other members: Lorna Bishop, Frikkie Botha, Rick van Rossum and Carel Hanke. Petrus Venter will advise the committee as DWA representative. The committee may co-opt members as they go along to facilitate specific tasks.

All the best to HEFF in this very important task!
