Hug a scorpion?

"I don't want to look for scorpions!" shouted a very little girl perched on her Dad's shoulders as they left The Sheds for the second Scorpion Walk of the year.

The walk, organised by the Crocodile River Reserve, was led by our favourite Scorpion Man, Jonathan Leeming.

Jenny Cornish, who hosts many of the walks and talks at The Sheds, recounted the scene with delight.  “Guess who was the first to hold a scorpion - Little Miss Cute!”

Jonathan has a talent for getting humans to make friends with scorpions.  “Hold it in one hand, slowly cover it with your other hand, and voila!  The creature is perfectly happy in its favourite position:  a warm, dark, safe hiding place.”  Ja, well, no, fine….

First thing to watch for when confronting a scorpion, or when the scorpion confronts you:  What is the biggest - the tail or the pincers? If it’s the pincers, he’s trying hard to scare you.  If it’s the tail, watch out!   But don’t take my word for it - go to www.scorpions.co.za
