A part of the dry packed stone wall of the enormous grave yard is seen in front, behind which are the Pretorius graves.

The farm, Welgegund was awarded to M W Pretorius (Swart Martiens) at the end of the 19th century. He was a nephew of Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, State President of the ZAR and founder of Pretoria. Swart Martiens’ son, Henning Petrus Nicolaas Pretorius founded the State Artillery of the ZAR. He was married to Debora Retief, daughter of Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief. She had engraved her fathers name into a rock at Kerkenberg in the Drankensberg when he went to negotiate with Dingaan but was treacherously murdered by him. Hannie Preller (neé Pretorius) was the granddaughter of Henning Petrus Nicolaas and Debora.

The Preller graves are in the northeastern corner of the graveyard diagonally opposite the Pretorius graves. The foot path in the background connects the two.

Hannie enherited the farm Welgegund, a portion of which was expropriated in 1920 for the building of the Hartbeespoort Dam and the remainder for township development. The township remained in the planning stage for a long time and when finally the development was abandoned an old farm labourer at Welgegund exclaimed “phelile indaba!” (“end of discussion”). This is how the name PELINDABA came about. Hannie Preller convinced her husband, Gustav to repurchase the farm from the State and the couple built a weekend rondavel house here in 1924 (see no 033) and a larger retirement house in 1934. This they called “Sterrewag” (“Observatory”) (see 031).

Preller, worried about flooding of the family graves by the water of the Hartbeespoort Dam, laid out a new cemetery high up on a rocky ridge on the Pelindaba farm. His wife, Hannie’s grandparents were re-interred here in 1924. in the other corner of the large cemetery Gustav Preller and several of the Preller family were buried in later years. In the northwestern corner with a magnificent view to the Dam, a huge pile of round rocks forms a monument to Gustav Preller.

The cemetery now falls under the aegis of the Atomic Energy Corporation, current owners of the land.
