Hierdie was hulle laaste huis.

In 1969 Erik Holm jnr (1945 - ), famous entomologist and son of the art historian dr S E Holm and his artist wife, Elly Holm, towed an old municipal double-decker bus up the mountain to live in it. After some years of doing entomological research in the Namib, he became head of the Department of Entomology at the University of Pretoria.  In 1973 he built himself a house a little higher up the mountain and his parents took over the bus.

E. Holm snr converted it into a guesthouse by building a stonewall around it and putting up a thatched roof.  In addition he built a studio for his wife and a thatched house, unique in every respect.  Not only was it richly adorned with Elly’s works of art, but everything in the house was hand-made: furniture, doors, windows and locks. The architectural style was Erik Holm Senior’s personal style, as was that of the other four houses designed and built by him in the Hartbeespoort area. This was Erik snr and Elly Holm’s last house.

In 1988 Erik jnr took over the homestead.  He placed eight old ox wagons (their dates vary) in a circle  (The Ring) to form an old-time laager.  He did some restoration work on them, painted old motives on them as decoration, put the wagon-hoods up again and equipped each wagon with its own toilet facilities. In this way he turned each wagon into an attractive and comfortable guest-room. To add to the pleasure of staying over, he started a restaurant where potjiekos and other nice dishes are served. Erik Holm senior’s old house now serves as the manager’s quarters.

Erik jnr also put into operation a museum, conference facilities, an open-air theatre and verandah-bar with an adjoining lapa, ideal for one-person shows.

The complex, consisting of separate buildings with diverse forms and thatched roofs, blends romantically into the landscape.
