The south side of the house faces the “werf” which is further defined by the outbuildings and water tanks. This side is today the entrance side. The general shape of the house is symmetrical with two gables “embracing” the werf. The entrance to the house however is not in the center. This suggests that originally the approach was from the north.

The north elevation of the house is more formal and perfectly symmetrical with a gable in the center. Still there is no main entrance door in this gable, as one would expect. Possibly it was closed in later years. Seen from here, the house very much resembles the classical Cape Dutch homestead with the mountain as backdrop. A rough indication of a road on the northern side could point at this having been the original main approach.

This homestead was built in 1927 by Mr Findlay (a friend of Johan Schoeman) in a style that calls to mind the Overberg homesteads of the late 18th century.  Thus it can be regarded as part of the revival of the Cape Dutch style, which became fashionable in South Africa during the years after the restoration of Groot Constantia in 1924.  The placement of the homestead at the foot of the mountain is also typical of Cape Dutch architecture and its sense of landscape.

The roughly plastered concrete walls catch the eye of the beholder.  The use of concrete could be a reference to the dam wall that was completed in 1921 or it could be an imitation of the house of Johan Schoeman at Meerhof which was also cast in concrete (see 044).  The roof was originally made of corrugated iron, but it was later covered with metal tiles.  The rather low ceilings and ceiling beams are made of Oregon pine.  There is a large veranda on the northern side of the house, whereas the yard is on the southern side.

In 1942 W W C Bezuidenhout (1899 – 1977) bought the farm and became involved in both dairy and chicken farming.  More stables were built as well as a pump room with water tanks on top.  The tanks were originally made of bent corrugated iron, which at a later stage was wrapped in sacks that had been dipped in cement.  This was a customary method of preventing the tanks from leaking and to keep the water cool.  The cement casing is still there, but the tanks have probably rusted away long ago.   Between 1938 and 1945 Italian prisoners of war laid out a big garden and built a concrete pergola in front of the house on the northern side and a swimming pool on the eastern side.  There is also a family graveyard on the property.

At present the third generation of Bezuidenhouts are living in the house, which has remained largely unchanged.  The outbuildings on the southern side now serve as guest rooms.

[Note: Xanadu Estate Phase 1 was established after the article was written. The building is still located within the new Xanadu Phase 2 development]

From the north this house has a real grand appearance. The white plastered linings around doors and windows on a background of grey rough cast plaster reinforces the classical design. The roof was originally corrugated iron, which was later covered with metal tiles.
