The automatic teller machines at a shopping centre in Ifafi have become a serious concern as people are increasingly being robbed of their bank cards and money.
Eighty-four-year old Laurika Viljoen was robbed of her bank card at Sediba Plaza around 09:00 on Thursday morning and R4 000 was withdrawn from her bank account only minutes later.
“I was just finishing my transaction and as my card came out of the machine a man came from behind and just grabbed the card. He jumped into a silver Hyundai and drove away. I was so shaken, I couldn’t even dial the number to report the theft. Someone else had to do it. There were no security guards in sight. I want to warn people not to use these ATMs. It is dangerous,” she said.
In the past two months, a number of cases of robbery at these ATMs have been reported.
“The CPF and police urge all ATM users to be on the lookout for suspicious people around the teller machines. Never let anyone close to you and do not accept any offered assistance. If you feel uncomfortable, rather go to another ATM or make withdrawals from till points at supermarkets. These crimes are drastically on the increase and residents are warned to be very careful. Also report suspicious people to security guards at the location of the ATM,” Romano van der Spuy, chairman of the Hartbeespoort community policing forum said.
